the colors in my dreams

North Carolina-based experimental folk-rock artist and singer-songwriter Ashley Virginia is delighted to announce the release of her new album "the colors in my dreams" on February 16, 2024.

Recorded in a historic farmhouse in Glendon, North Carolina, by Black Rabbit Audio, Virginia was joined by 15 different musical friends and collaborators. Together, they lived on this historic property for eight days to immerse themselves in the creative process. Currently owned and inhabited by North Carolina musician Laura Jane Vincent, this rural and rustic 21 acre farm lies deep in the heart of Moore County, North Carolina. This historical property was once owned by a multi-generational family of country doctors, and the grounds contain a fully preserved doctors office built circa 1820, filled with trinkets and tools of a fascinating variety. The space has become a hub for the music community in the Piedmont of North Carolina, with Vincent hosting an twice annual music festival on her porch, “Glendonfest”. This album is the 4th album that has been recorded in this house.

The closest grocery store is a 30 minute drive down the road, and you’ll certainly lose cell service along the way somewhere on the backroads; but the river is a 3 minute walk from the front door. The recording process was truly spectacular because the environment allowed for everyone involved to be completely immersed in the creative process, free from distractions of daily life, and surrounded by the unfettering serene. Rehearsals for the session were intentionally excluded beforehand. Rather, Virginia created and distributed charts and demo recordings, resulting in the collaborative and improvisational recordings that make up the album.

“I’m really grateful to have really amazing musical friends who made up the band for this record,” says Virginia. “I really wanted to capture that improvisational magic that comes naturally when you have good musical chemistry with the people you are playing with.”

This album promises to be a thoughtful work of art, featuring a collection of songs that will take the listener on a journey of self-discovery, introspection, and lament. The album is set to be released on February 16th and will be available on all major streaming platforms.

Many thanks to the Arts Council of Greater Greensboro / North Carolina Arts Council, who partially funded the recording process during their 2022 Individual Artist Grant cycle.
